Inconsistent and Slow Speeds with Fiber past few days

Hi all.  I have been an incredibly thrilled AT&T Fiber customer for several years.  I have never had an issue with speed or connectivity ever.

However, the past few days, this has not been the case.  My fiber speeds have been the slowest they have ever been (both upload and download) and the connection itself has not been near as reliable.  I have rebooted my gateway (BGW210 w/ current software version: 2.15.4) a number of times over the past several days and still experiencing the issues.

Any ideas or suggestions?  Thanks!

Hi, sokkerpunk.

Is your gateway plugged into an outlet or a surge protector?

We suggest that you plug your gateway into an outlet because the surge protectors can cause loss of service, slow speeds and random reboots.

Let us know if this helps.

Let's get your speeds back up to par, @sokkerpunk!

We suggest that you view these tips on troubleshooting your internet, specifically the sections titled Modem Environment and Wi-Fi near the bottom of the article.

Also, can you please answer the following questions:

  1. Are you experiencing slow speeds on both wired and wireless devices? This can alter the way we troubleshoot your speed concerns.
  2. What type of devices are having the slow speed issues? We ask this in case we need to provide device specific troubleshooting tips.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Hi.  Thanks for the response.  I am running my tests from my laptop hardwired directly to an ethernet port on the modem.

I followed your advice on resetting the modem.  I did that a few minutes ago and it is now back online.  When I do a simple speedtest from the commandline, I get the following:

Server: Point Broadband - Marietta, GA (id = 38499)
        ISP: AT&T U-verse
Latency:     5.01 ms   (0.60 ms jitter)
Download:   936.59 Mbps (data used: 470.1 MB )
Upload:   114.98 Mbps (data used: 99.2 MB )
Packet Loss: Not available.

My Download is acceptable but you can see the Upload is way off.  Typically with fiber, those values are fairly close to the same value.

For what its worth, this is on a Macbook Pro (2019) on macOS 12.1

Thanks!

Dang - I do have this thing plugged into an APC surge protector.  I now have the model plugged directly into a wall outlet.

I just ran 5 separate speedtests using the same server as in my previous post in 5 minute increments.  For the first time in the past few days, I am receiving consistent 900+ Mbps both up and down.  Sweet!  Thanks!

Let me watch this over the next couple of days and report back.  Again, thank you!

That's great to hear, @sokkerpunk

If the speeds start to go down again, or you just have some more questions, feel free to reach back out!

Thank you for being the best part of AT&T!
