Streaming TV constantly buffering

Does ATT uverse internet intentionally limit the throughput to services like Sony PSVue?

I have a data only connection with ATT uverse. Its the giga fiber plan.

I have 5 separate 4G AppleTvs .. all buffering. I only run 1-2 at a time. But to test do same thing on each device and get same results. Buffering every 5-10 minutes in a show. Pretty much kills the experience.

Following...I pretty much have the same experience with 1GB Fiber service. Coming from a Spectrum 300MB modem I expected much better.

What does your speedtest show?  It seems odd to me and it could be an issue with your line.  I have Internet1000 and have no issues at all...running multiple servers that are constantly sending data out, while backing up all my data to a cloud service (100-200mbps upload), I have not had any buffering issues while watching any streams (have DirecTVnow service and Hulu).

i test out consistently at least 500 / 500 .. should be higher but never going to get the theoretical 1G up and down

I stream on PSVue (sony) .. a competitor to DirectTVnow (AT&T)

Has been better lately .. but still get a pause / buffering for few seconds every hour or so.

@lottytx Are those hardwired or wi-fi speeds?  And what what are the speeds like from the gateway's own speedtest? I understand some people say the gateway's speedtest is "fixed" but it is worth the performing the test because if is 500/500, you know there is a problem.

My understanding is 500Mbps on wireless is a proper value. Assume this is on 5GHz.

Are you using the BGW210 RG, and can you confirm the firmware level.

the 500 / 500 test was from wired endpoint. The accuracy of the web based speedtest tools i use varies so i run tests from several and use this as average.

my view is the bandwidth and thruput are to spec. The question / suspicion is ATT is messing with selective traffic including the PSVue urls / IPs that competes with their streaming offering.  I will say over the past few months the buffering / caching has lessened measurably with no change to my setup but still occurs enough to notice.

I also have a second backup WAN for failover. I do not get buffering when i run on this feed. I prefer to use the ATT giga as the primary for a number of reasons other than this TV streaming.

To summarize my network topology

from the fiber from pole .. connects to Alactel-Lucent  ONT .. single ethernet connects to RG (bridge to RG)

the RG Arris BGW210-700.. connects to my router / firewall appliance  (bridge to my router with static IPs .. RG wifi disabled)

router firewall appliance includes multiple APs (meshed) ... router has UTM max of 515 Mbps .. so this is where i am taking a thruput haircut .. this does NOT cause the buffering ...

speed test from RG diagnostics page i get 900 / 900

From the endpoints i get consistent 500 / 500 .. should be more than enough to stream without buffering

Okay. If your BGW is not on 1.6.9, try updating manually. There was a fairly serious issue with port forwarding and some had reported problems with IP passthrough.

Selective throttling has crossed my mind. I can stream things all day long on most channels, but TCM app on FireTV buffers. I see some others talk about it, so for now I’m laying the blame on TCM. It only started doing this recently within the past few months.

yes the BGW is on 1.6.9  .. so that is not an issue.

✔️

I can try checking some other streams using an AFTV or a Roku if you have any egregious ones you suspect.

This is wired, not wireless.
