Door to door AT&T sales people -- is it a scam?

A group of people are on my street today going door to door to sell AT&T fiber. Two came to my door and chated for while and then proceeded to get a lot of info from me to see "if I qualified." They did not show badges but showed some AT&T advertising collateral and used an iPad. Later I got an email from one of them, but he used a gmail address even though it came through to me on a semi-official looking address. They asked for my social security number. That is very suspicious and said no and good bye. No badges where shown or worn.

Probably an independent reselling AT&T services but not an official AT&T employee (or just a bold scammer). I don't think AT&T does cold door to door sales. You probably gave them more information than you should have (like your email address) so don't be surprised if you start getting all kinds of unsolicited emails now.
