Reactivate old Ameritech Phone Number

I want to get use of my deceased parents old Ameritech landline telephone number. After many years, it has not been used or reissued ... AT&T took over Ameritech, so they are the owners of the number. An online search on the AT&T website shows it is available, but when I called to get a new line I was told the number was "inactive" and it could NOT be done, not with a new landline or a new cell phone. I don't understand why I can't have a number assigned/reassigned or activated if that number is not in use?!? There must be someone in management or some button to push that can do this? Any help on the subject is appreciated

All numbers are computer generated they can no longer assign a specific number, been this way for sometime now.

This post and response was > 4 yrs ago. I'm hoping that times have changed and there's some hope in recovering possession of an old landline number. I too, would like to reactivate an old number as well. It is also disconnected. Please advise. Thanks!
