Request for Advice on Retaining My Phone Number During Extended International Travel

Hello AT&T Customer Support,

I am seeking advice regarding my AT&T phone number as I will be traveling internationally for six months. During this period, I do not wish to continue paying my regular monthly fees but want to ensure that my phone number is retained for when I return.

Here are a few specific questions I have:

  1. Is there an option to temporarily suspend my service while keeping my phone number active? If so, what are the costs and conditions associated with this option?
  2. Are there any low-cost plans or services available that would allow me to retain my phone number without incurring the full monthly charges?
  3. What is the policy for retaining a phone number without continuous service, and would paying every 60 days help in retaining my number?
  4. Are there any virtual number services recommended by AT&T that I can transfer my number to during my absence?

I would appreciate detailed information on any available solutions or recommendations for my situation. Your assistance in this matter is highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

From May 2018, may have changed but at that time you could suspend wireless plan for max of 6 months…

https://www.wireless.att.com/business/support/cru/pdf/suspend_reinstate_service_cru.pdf

If you suspend your service to go on vacation, your monthly service charge is reduced and service automatically reinstates after 180 days.
Important: If you choose to suspend service for vacation for a wireless number that's still under contract, we may extend 1 or more of the following dates:
 Your contract end date
 Your upgrade eligibility date
 Your Early Termination Fee date
We may also delay your access charge discounts for eligible rate plans. We extend or delay accounts for the same amount of days that your account is suspended. Note that government accounts are exempt from extensions.
If your account is past due or inactive, your ability to perform a suspension for the account will be limited. To suspend your number for other reasons or for a longer period of time, contact your administrator.
While your service is suspended, the following conditions apply:
 Incoming and outgoing calls are disabled except calls to 911 and to AT&T Customer Service (611).
 Features are not functional, including voicemail and call forwarding.
 Monthly feature and service charges may continue while service is suspended.

if referring to home phone service instead of cellular, for Uverse platform can place on vacation hold with charge of $7 per month per service… all services have to be placed on hold.
EXAMPLE, Internet, TV service and ATT Phone (Uverse VoIP) would be $7 each or $21 per month.
