deregistering handsets for TL86109

I have had a TL86109 for 10 years.  It finally wore out.  I bought a replacement, followed all the instructions.  Deregistered the old base; registered the new one.  It turns out the new one didn't work properly.  Packed it up and shipped it back, only I failed to deregister the phones.  Trying to connect them to the old unit, but cannot.  I looked at previous advice such as "*331734# followed by menu/select" but I cannot get the handset off this message: "out of range or no power at the base."  Can anyone help me or are the old handsets destined for the garbage?

If none of the methods found here work than we have no further information. It's most likely registered to another base and if you can't force a deregister you can't register it to your current base unit.
