Remove telephone poles

I have several old telephone poles on my property and wondering what process is involved in removing them? I will gladly cut them them down if permitted. I just need to know who to contact.

Use this link for downed or obstructed lines.

Do not cut them down they are hazardous waste and you can get a large fine introducing the contaminated sawdust in the air. The poles are treated And it’s also a federal offense to modify damage or interfere with telco equipment whether actively used or not.

Got it. I wasn’t aware of the hazardous waste issue or the federal offense. Thanks for the warning.

@Constructive Is the guru on the outside plant stuff, but I want to throw a couple things out there.  On the cutting the poles off, if given permission by AT&T or whoever owns the poles.  I think the hazardous waste may be governed locally or by state, I not disputing the fact that creosote is hazardous, just that you can't cut them down.  The only reason I say this is the power company cuts off old poles all the time around here especially if they're in a fence line, but I've also seen them cut them off and come back and remove the butts later.  Another thing we use to have was "abandoned in place" basically leave the poles in and give them to the property owner, if they wanted.  I think they still use that term for abandoned cables. Anyway that's my two cents, with change.

Other states may be different but here in California they are extremely strict. Poles must be pulled not cut if at all possible if cut they must soak the pole.  Upon removal they are cut down to 3-5 foot lengths put in a bin and transported in a covered container to the hazardous waste facility. From there I’m not sure what happens. But then again here in California if there is one AAA battery in a trash can we are dinged  (they have people that come out randomly and empty the bin into the ground and they go through every single piece of trash looking for violations)

Yeah I’m in Tennessee and we do things a little differently over here, but hey, different strokes for different folks. I’ll be sure to contact AT&T before doing anything with them. I like the abandoned in place idea and that seems to be the best designation in this case but doesn’t hurt to double check. Thanks!

There is an old pole that still has I believe at&t cable wires on it. The city has already came to install a new utility pole and said the wires on the old pole is at&t how can we get that removed?

The link is in this 4 year old topic. It's the best info we have.
