Uverse voice incompatible with IP Passthrough on u-verse gateways?

Over at DSL reports, lore has it that u-verse voice is incompatible with IP Passthrough (the nearest thing to bridged mode on AT&T's gateways). See, e.g., this FAQ, which states that "IF you use AT&T uVerse Voice (VoIP) service it is not recommended to put your NVG589/599 Remote Gateway into IP Passthrough mode. IP Passthrough mode has been shown to conflict with uVerse Voice service in which incoming calls may not connect properly resulting in callers hearing an error message."

Is this true? (Searching this forum, I found one thread about incompatibility between DMZ+ on a different modem and voice.  My incomplete understanding is that IP Passthrough is closely related, if not identical, to DMZ.)  I'd like to use third party router with NVG599 (which requires IP Passthrough) but don't want to lose voice service.

If it is true, does anyone understand why?   Any workarounds?  One would think the gateway could intercept VOIP traffic.

Thanks for your help.

Not long after posting, came across a thread here that suggests that at least some users had experienced problems with voice calls not being received after setting up third party router using IP Passthrough.  But it's not clear to me what the pattern is or if there is any consensus on existence or causes of issue or possible solutions.  See: How to put the Motorola NVG589 in 'bridge mode' (or as close as you can).

Hi @mazeltov,

There was a reported issue in the pass with this, but we have since corrected it. You should have no issues when setting up IP passthrough or DMZ mode and using your U-verse VOIP service.

Hi, I am having this exact problem with my NVG589.  If I enable ip passthrough, voice calls go straight to voicemail.  This setup has worked for me for over 2 years and just started happening?

Thanks,

Phil

I would suggest a factory reset of your Gateway.  If that doesn't fix it, report back here and send a Private Message to ATTU-verseCare about your situation.

That's actually how I found out the issue.  I was troubleshooting the voice issue with Support and they finally reset my NVG589 back to default;  calls then worked fine.  As soon as I re-enabled ip passthrough, it broke the voip.

Can anyone help with whether IP Passthrough mode on the NVG589 continues to conflict with U-verse voice as of 7/13/2016? We can't receive incoming calls. The line rings but when we pick up we can't hear our callers and they can't hear us and the line just disconnects. We have no problems when we call out. Since I enabled IP Passthrough on our NVG589 yesterday, we seem to have broken incoming Uverse voice service.

Background:

We're on U-verse Voice and Internet 45 Mbps. We struggled for a while with poor wireless coverage in our house so last November we set up a TP-Link Archer C9 router behind the RG to take over the wireless and routing functions for our home network. I connected the router to the RG and turned off the wireless on the RG. I turned off IPv6 (on the Archer too) but I have not changed any of the other settings on the RG. It currently has 3 cables connected to it: data, voice and the ethernet cable running to the WAN port on the Archer. All LAN clients are managed through the Archer.

The Archer definitely helped but lately web pages have intermittently refused to load so I began trolling this forum again to see if it was set up correctly behind the NVG. It seemed probable that it wasn't and that it would be a good idea to enable IP Passthrough. (If I understand correctly, that configuration is supposed to eliminate NAT conflicts between the NVG and the Archer and potentially solve our sporadic problem with web pages loading.) So I enabled IP Passthrough yesterday and the internet side of things seems better although only clicking over time will really tell. However, incoming voice calls don't connect at all. Any hope for IP Passthru AND Uverse voice to get along well? Is there something I'm missing?

I should add that our RG has been a lot flakier in the last month or two. It has been uber reliable since its installation in March 2014 but lately the broadband service seems to disconnect briefly with nearly daily regularity. ATT has been doing a lot of work in our neighborhood to get it ready for Gigapower so I attribute our brief outages to that. I have no idea if I'm right or if this even matters for the main issue at hand.

Thanks for any assistance you can lend!

@caplew, do you happen to know if the people who are having issues calling you are using Wi-Fi calling or some other VOIP service (vs. POTS or normal mobile)?

Only mobile calls so far.

Do you know whether that mobile is LTE, GSM, CDMA?

Can you try something else as a debugging issue?

In short, I think there is an identified issue with the NVG 5x9 firmware (with the IP Passthrough feature turned on) and certain forms of VOIP calling (Wi-Fi Calling being one of them).  I've heard that it also affects LTE, but I don't know that for sure.  I also don't know why the source matters, when even POTS calls have to be transformed into VOIP, but apparently the way AT&T transforms the calls into SIP differs from how the SIP is crafted from the other VOIP providers.
