Do I need to keep AT&T Landline service connected for U-Verse Internet?

I have an old home AT&T landline (plain old telephone service - POTS) being billed every month, but we no longer use or need a regular landline phone.

I use AT&T U-Verse service for Internet Only - connected on a separate CAT5 line from our home phone box to an AT&T Motorola NVG589 Gateway/Router, without digital phone service on this plan.

Can I discontinue my regular POTS landline service without affecting my U-Verse internet connection?  Are there any shared physical line connections that would disrupt my U-Verse connection if I discontinue my POTS line?

Hi @skamikawa,

Thank you for contacting us on Community Forums! We'd be happy to help you.

If you're asking if you can disconnect your Old Telephone System (POTS) line and still keep U-verse Internet, then: yes, you can. You can have U-verse Internet with or without any kind of voice (POTS or U-Verse Voice).  You have to just disconnect POTS line. As long as you do that correctly, it won't interfere with your U-verse Internet.  In any event that disconnects your Internet by accident, you can schedule a tech and fix it.

Let us know if this helps or if you need more assistance.

Happy to assist!

Jennifer, AT&T Community Specialist.
