Interaction between Call Forwarding and Caller ID

Not sure what you're looking for, but caller ID has nothing to do with call forwarding. If you forward a line say to a cell phone that only shows the number, but the forwarded number displays both name and number you're not going to get the name on the forwarded to phone. On the same note if the forwarded phone doesn't subscribe to CID the forwarded to number won't get CID even if it does have CID capabilities as no information was sent from the forwarded line. 

I called AT&T to add call forwarding to a landline. The AT&T rep told me I needed Caller ID as well or else the forwarded calls wouldn't have Caller ID. That didn't sound right, so I wanted to check with others.

That's right, they won't. Unless somethings changed in the delivery of CID since I retired. Also, it's a possibility that whatever package is required to get call forwarding includes CID. This link states that call waiting and caller ID are required. So, looks like if you get any features including call forwarding you're going to get CID. 

@spoom2 The link just goes to a generic landline page. Call Waiting and Caller ID are required for what? For Call Forwarding? That can't be right, as there isn't any need for Call Waiting while Call Forwarding is in effect.

The original question is if Caller ID is required when Call Forwarding is in effect in order for the forwarded-to phone to receive Caller ID. Calling Line ID (CLID) is always sent in call signaling between switches; the Caller ID feature controls if it is transmitted to the called line during ringing. So the question is really asking: does Call Fowarding terminate an incoming call at the original called number's switch, and then generate a new call from the original called number to the forwarded-to number, or is the call redirected from the original called number's switch to the forward-to number's switch? If the former, Caller ID on the the original called number might or might not be required; if the latter, it wouldn't be.

Yes, that exactly what it says. So, the way I interpret it is if you get a package that includes call forwarding it's also REQUIRED you get CID and call waiting. Notice I said the way I "interpret it". I'm not an employee nor am I privy to all of AT&T's rules of service. 

I appreciate you trying to help. I interpret the text as merely saying that those two services require a monthly fee for each. I don't see it as saying anything about any interaction between any of the services.

Well, you're not going to get call forwarding for free and they don't let you pick and choose which features you want, you get a package that contains the features you want and take whatever goes with it. 

My experience with landline phones has always been that each feature can be added independently (each for a fee). I've never needed to purchase a package of them. But landline service is regulated by the FCC and each state's utilities commission, so the rules may well be different in your state than in the ones I've lived in.
