Land line service problems

For the second time in two months my land line is dead.

Yes, I have the phone# for Repair Service. How am I supposed to call them if my phone is dead? (No I don't have a cell phone.)

Oh, just go to att.com/repair. Yeah, that works just great:

When this happened in March my ATT Internet was out, too. Repair Service dispatched a tech who fixed the land line but left my internet dead. I had to put in another call to get the internet fixed. Four (4) days of messing around to get everything right.

I have ATT landline and ATT internet. My phone is dead again and the website is broken, too!

OK, I'll drive over to a friend's house and use their phone. Hey, it's 1966 again! I'll drive the Rambler. 👍👍🙄

Thursday, 10/23, 8:30p. Finally I get a phone call on the landline from a Tech informing that the problem is fixed. They didn't break my internet in the process which is also good. So, basically, 5 days without a phone this time. ATT is a mess.

Sounds like you have DSL. If so, you can check the outside wiring yourself to see if there are any loose wires, corrosion, wires touching, moisture, etc and clean that up yourself. Or, you can connect an analog phone to the incoming line and see if you get a dial tone. If you do, then the issue is your inside house wiring, which is your problem to fix. If you still don't get a dial tone then it's probably the connection coming into your home in which case that's AT&T's problem. However, if you do have DSL keep in mind that AT&T (and other providers) are starting to phase out DSL so they are reluctant to do a truck role for repairs. If true, you may have to start looking around for a better alternative.

Online reporting for landlines hasn't worked in some time, you have to call repair service and make sure they understand you have a traditional landline POTS. I know you said you don't have a cell phone so you'll need to find a neighbor or friend who does have some type of service. If I were you, I'd probably file an FCC complaint that AT&T doesn't give alternatives to calling to report POTS outages.

Have no idea if this link will do you any good or not. It's the only link I found that may still work for POTS service, though it isn't specific to POTS. All POTS specific links give one type of error or another.

If you're complaining about driving to use a phone feeling like you are in the past, well then why not have a cell phone? Even a prepaid one can be an investment for emergencies. Landline service, at least Plain Old Telephone Systems (POTS) are what current tech, at least the phone companies, views as the past.

Rob 2121 does have a problem(S). I can imagine that living in an unincorporated area, I'm making a guess, has many benefits. However, it also has some interesting issues. The ones he describes are some of them.

So, I drove to a friends house to call Repair Service only to find that they do not take calls on outages on weekends. Only during business hours M-F. Really great service!

Rinse and repeat on Monday. A very nice representative took all of my information and scheduled a repair call for Tuesday between 10a and 2p.

By 4:30p today (Tuesday) there was no sign of a tech. (See how patient I am?) Again I drive to my friends house and put in another call to Repair Service. Apparently my repair ticket was entered but no Tech was assigned to the job.

So this rep, whom I could barely understand, scheduled a new service call and would not let me off the phone without trying to twist my arm to convert my phone service to digital or buy something new. After politely declining multiple times, I finally had to tell her I had other things to do and she was now making me angry.

More really great service from ATT who, oh by the way, is raising my internet rate again if I don't pay with a debit card! Yes, the same ATT who has demonstrated that they cannot keep my data secure and now wants me to put a bank card on my account or pay an additional $60/year. I am about done with this. How much will ATT get from me if I disconnect altogether?

@rob_2112  With regards to your debit card, AT&T announced months ago that they were going to remove the $5 per line credit if one continued to use a credit card for Autopay. Comcast did the same thing and other providers will probably follow suit. Credit card use for things like Autopay is becoming increasingly problematic for services that allow that because of credit card fraud and the increasing rates that the credit card companies charge the providers. AT&T didn't raise your internet rates they just removed the credit for using a credit card instead of a debit card or bank withdrawal.

Directly from the email received from ATT:

Starting June 9, 2024, we’re increasing the price of your internet plan by $5/mo.

No more misinformation, please.

So, Wednesday, 5/22, day 4 with no telephone.

Called Repair Service again. Agent, whom I could understand this time, tells me I am scheduled for Friday, the 24th. Well, that's news to me. Apparently, since I did not buy anything from the previous, apparently off-shore, agent I had spoken with, she stuck me out to the end of the week. Nice....

I ask the agent if he can move the appointment back. He said he could schedule me for 5/23. Please do, thank you. He said he did. We'll see....
