Automatic payment draft

Why/ how is it ok that AT&T will not accept my check (shows bank routing code and account number) but instead requires my debit card (giving their system access to the chip and security code) in order to qualify for a monthly auto draft?

Thank you for reaching out to us. We understand your concern regarding the prepaid payment, let's get the help you need.

Please follow the below steps to sign-up for auto-pay

Go to AutoPay. Sign in, if asked.
Select the account you want to sign up for AutoPay, if you have multiple accounts.
Toggle AutoPay On.
Follow the prompts to finish signing up.
Repeat these steps for each account you want to pay automatically

Have you had returned checks or bank drafts in the past? That's the normal reason.

They only have access to your " chip " if you use the card in person.

If you've had checks returned in the past, you would not be permitted to use checking account information again

I’ve never given them a check that was returned, never missed a payment, never made a late payment.
I was at a local AT&T store, and they asked for my debit card.

My account is more than 20 years with them.
