Just got a Samsung S4 Mini (SGH-I257) AT&T phone: trying to get the AT&T email app to work, but it stays stuck on "Initializing Mailbox" and will not load. Please help, need emails before TOMORROW!!!!

I recently changed my plan from $45/month to $65/month. Since I am currently not in the US, when someone calls my number they get a message saying I am unreachable instead of getting my voicemail.  Do I need to reset up my voicemail? Is it something I can do without having access to ATT on my phone?
