AT&Ts new scam

I have aways loved AT&T but I really feel like the new NEXT family plan is a scam. I used to be grandfathered in to unlimited data and was only using about 10 gb a month for 4 lines. The new plan sounded like a good idea since I never reached 15gbs - ever. Now that I have switched over to the NEXT family plan, we are using over 20gbs a month with no changes in our daily activities and my ohone bill is now double what it used to be. Coincidence? I will be not renew my plan and will be cancelling ASAP.

all you have to do to cancel is pay off the phones you have on next.  Then your free to go.  That is the advantage of next.  I have 6 lines and a tablet and have only gotten close to the 10gb we have.  But then again I have the kids phones set to shut off at 1.2GB and they cant remove it.  Its os based.

I imagine that something changed for you (like getting new phones that probably have different OS versions on them than the old phones).

I had 2 iPhones on unlimited data plans and the average monthly data use for the 2 phones was about 6.5GB and when I looked at the max for either line and added those together (even though they were on different months) it was still only 9GB. I switched to the 10GB Mobile Share plan (keeping my old phones) and my average monthly data usage comes to about 6.6GB. My highest single month has been just over 7GB. You see that by switching the account only, I had no change in my data usage levels. Now, when we get new phones, I expect that we will have a temporary jump in data usage while we get used to the new phones and get them all setup the way we want them. Also, we have noticed that over the years, with each new iPhone we get, we tend to use a little more data than we did with our previous phones. I don't think that this is AT&T's fault, I think that we just like new features available to us and use them more. I don;t know about you, but when I get a new device, I can't stop myself from "playing with it" for the first few months, just to learn all the new things it can do, and can't do. Of course, that always drains the battery faster, and causes it to use more data than before...

Since you mention NEXT programs, I can only assume that you purchased new phones, so I strongly suggest that "nothing changed" is not really that accurate. I bet that quite a bit has changed in the phones you use, and that would be the probable reason for the sudden increase in data usage. Especially since the newer smartphones often come pre-configured to use your cellular data for many things, and they also download many things "in the background" so that it seems faster to you when you want to display them. This "predictive logic" often downloads things you never see, so you may use a good chunk of cellular data for things you never see while the predictive logic is learning what you want to see. You have to turn many of these features off on newer smartphones to prevent them from wasting your bandwidth, but then once you do, your shiny new device won't seem as fast as the manufacturer made you think it was by all the games they played with trying to predict what you would want to see and downloading it before you request it to be displayed...

My phone was the only one of 4 that changed. I went from a galaxy s4 to the galaxy s5 and my data is still the lowest in the group. There has been no change to the other 3 phones and the data usage jumped dramatically as soon as I switched my plans.

It is not at all unlikely that AT&T is taking all sorts of liberties with your data now that you will be paying for it if you go over.

When we switch from unlimited to the mobile share value plan, all of a sudden AT&T was pushing updates to the phones, which previously were forced to be downloaded over our home internet. In fact, the update was downloaded without our permission, we just learned about it after it happened and a window popped up if we wanted to install it.

I would also check to see if the Playstore is now downloading updates automatically.
