Charged a bill over a month after cancelling my plan

I cancelled my att plan on the 20th of May and was assured by the employee that no further payments would take place. My line was removed from the account holder and I have STILL been charged nearly 100 dollars for the international plan on the 22nd of June. Simply disgusting to see att take advantage of students and customers in general.

When were the international charges actually incurred?  If the charges are real and were incurred on the 20th or before, then you’ll get charged for them.  If you cancel in the middle of the billing period, you’ll get a final bill for what service you actually used through the day you cancelled.

So you wouldn't be getting a bill, the owner of the account is the one who's getting a bill.

Has he printed out the bill for you?

And what is the bill really for?

Has he sent you a usage report which continues to show charges on your AT&T phone number?   Yes?  International charges may be delayed, but it's also possible that your service is not canceled.

If you are not the account owner, you can't cancel a line only the account owner has authorization to do that.

You need to look at the billing, and since it's not your account you have to ask the account owner for assistance

@sid017839

A bill should be expected, for example, your billing period ends on the 18th of the month:

When you canceled on May 20th, you'd be in the billing period of May 19 through June 18th (and that bill would be sent out a few days after the 18th, such as June 22).

You're almost always going to get a bill when you cancel as you're in a billing period.

In my example dates above, you'd actually get 2 bills, one around May 22 for the period before you canceled and the one you just got (June 22nd-ish).

If the account holder looks at the bill, they should be able to see which days you were billed for internationally. It's probably for a day before you canceled, because if you were actually canceled, they wouldn't even know you out of the country.

These might not be your exact numbers, if you tell me the correct dates, I'd be happy to tweak my response to match your numbers exactly.

For some reason I can't reply to comments individually, but I'll try to address everything here:-

edit: I was wrong about it being on the 20th of May, It was on the 22nd, before the charges was incurred

I am on a prepaid plan.

The Billing period ends on the 22nd of every month.

Since I had to turn on my esim on the 22nd of May to cancel my plan, and I'm outside the USA, I was already charged for the international plan (on the same day -> i.e. from May 22nd to June 22nd).

For the person saying that I can't cancel the line since I'm not the account holder I was given the pin in order to do exactly just that.

Regardless of what anybody says, I was assured by the employee over the customer service line that my line would be removed from the account right before the next billing period, so I would not be charged anything for my line ever again. Not to mention, he tried 4 separate times to convince me to switch to a "cheaper plan" instead of cancel my line, and had me wait almost 15 minutes on a 20 minute phone call just to come up with these phony alternatives. It is simply slimy and pathetic behavior.

In the case that I'm wrong about the technicalities, and I should be charged a bill on the 22nd of June, provided that this is the final bill, I will accept my fault. But it's clear that this company is not customer friendly. End of.

If the original poster has a bill cycle that ends on the same date every month, and is paying $10 per day for international roaming they are not on prepaid.

😑

Does not matter whether you were given the PIN code or not, only the account owner, in this case mom, can cancel your phone line.

Please ask Mom to do so

How can you be on prepaid?  The prepaid international “plan” has to be bought for $35 for 7 days before you can roam internationally.  They don’t bill you after you use it.  Many of the things you are describing are only possible on postpaid plans.

@dwill05

I agree. I don't think the original poster has any idea what they're paying for. I'm not sure Mom knows how to cancel service.  But I do know if the original poster is not the account owner, they are not authorized to cancel a phone line off of the account. Doesn't matter if they have the PIN code.

Mom has to call to cancel

@dwill05 I believe my post is quite clear since I laid everything out sequentially

In the USA I was on a prepaid plan. A few days after I leave the country, I call ATT international customer service to cancel my line. I am charged 100 dollars on the same day i.e. the 22nd of May. I would assume that this would be for 22nd May to June.

@formerlyknownas Good one. You can ragebait all you want with the mom jokes, the fact is my line has been removed from the account and was absent when i received a bill. The international service literally has a set process which asks you for the line you'd like to cancel, the account holders phone number, and the pin REGARDLESS of the phone number calling. Willing to bet that you'd repeat the same point like a broken record though. Hope you find solace in that.

Unfortunately it's not clear. Because you stated you have prepaid, but prepaid does not work outside the country unless you prepay for roaming service otherwise you have no service.

Also prepaid service is individual.  The only account owner for a prepaid plan is the individual (you). There can be a multi-line group, but it does not change the fact that you still have to prepay for extra services.  It is not possible to incur roaming charges as a prepaid customer.

So that means you must be on a post-paid account.

You were on postpaid.

Postpaid can bill you for roaming services outside of the USA which is exactly what they have done.

Postpaid charges you for international service outside the United States. Only postpaid can charge you for anything after the fact.

@formerlyknownas Good one. You can ragebait all you want with the mom jokes,

There was no joke.  It's your mother's account.

the fact is my line has been removed from the account and was absent when i received a bill.

You mean your mother received a bill for international roaming services that you used .

Roaming services can take several weeks depending on where you are roaming to be posted on the account. So yes it is entirely possible to be charged for roaming services after your line has been removed

My mother's roaming usage, and the corresponding bill appeared on two subsequent bills after her return to the United States.

Your mother should be able to see the usage on her bill. The usage says what dates that service charges occured.
