Is this a SIM with a new number, or an upgrade with the same number you are already using in an older phone?  When you get a new phone, AT&T usually charges an activation fee on the first bill, unless it’s waived.  That charge comes whether the phone is SIM is actually activated or not (it’s more of a SIM fee).

If you had successfully activated the new SIM, your old SIM would have stopped working since you can’t have two active SIMs with the same number.  Does your old SIM still work?  Why wouldn’t you activate the new SIM?

Then what eSIM are you talking about?  If your activated the AT&T eSIM on your new phone and it’s working, then I don’t understand the original issue.  What SIM did you cancel?
