Family signed up with ATT through a door rep? is this valid or should I switch to ATT via In-Store or Online

So some guys claiming to work for ATT came by and offered us a ATT deal because "ATT was buying Verizon towers and offering deals for switching for those who are noncustomers and those with atleast ATT Fiber" and got one of my family members to to sign everyone up for it.

Other forums told me that those were actually third party sellers and I shouldn't deal with them as if I had billing problems in the future ATT wouldn't be able to help me since it was third party and would have to go through third party support for future problems. Also the promo offer looked identical to the one that appears in ATT website but other say sometimes ATT won't acknowlege those deals if it's a third party seller. Weird, because those sellers told me to go to ATT store when I activate the phones (I haven't yet) to talk about the promo deals to go through.

Others online recommended we cancel everything and go and sign up with ATT in store if we really wanted to make a switch. I want to hear other peoples input here too before I make the decision today whether or not I cancel everything.

Also I hope I posted on the right category.

AT&T doesn't do cold door-to-door sales. It was probably an independent, not an AT&T employee, so anything they say or promise may not be accurate. If it were me, I'd either go into a Corporate Store (one that you have confirmed is Corporate and not an Authorized Retail Store) or go online at AT&T's website. The kiosks in places like Sam's Club, Costco, etc are also independents so I'd steer clear of them as well.

It depends on what the rep promised. AT&T's pricing and promotions are listed on the website, and that's what AT&T will honor. Sometimes these reps promise the moon because they won't have to see you again.

If you want to give details of the order, we can help you figure it out. Also be aware that after an order, AT&T sends this colorful document purporting to show you what to expect. However, they're infamous for being incredibly wrong. Ignore that.

Pretty sure that AT&T buying Verizon towers was a lie, so take it from there.

@MicCheck The seller is listed as "New Cingular Wireless PCS, LLC d/b/a AT&T Mobility" It sounds third-party to me

This was in all 3 Phone Lines.

So do you know if it's true that if I have billing problems ATT wouldn't be able to help me?

@dwill05 Yeah I was pretty confused and skeptical about it too. My dad was the one who got roped into signing up and he's not a native speaker (tho he's fluent enough to me} so he asked me too look it up when those guys where there. Of course I couldn't find any information verifying or falsifying their claim in a short amount of time.

Now I have to help my dad in undoing all that mess. I wished he ignored the door.

Also those guys came to my house 2 times, the first time everyone ignored it, the second time was when my dad came home and we all told him to ignore it, he didn't

@poltergeists  Unfortunately AT&T will only honor what is listed, in detail, on their website for promos and deals, regardless of what you were told or promised. I would gather your receipts etc and file an online complaint with the BBB. That will get forwarded to AT&T Upper Management and you will be contacted by someone from the Office of the President. That way you can discuss the matter directly with someone within AT&T who is several levels above the normal CS Agents. Hopefully they can help and offer suggestions.

AT&T Mobility is corporate. Assuming you sign up for the student discount, trade in your phone and sign up for autopay/paperless, the plan & phone pricing are correct. The only thing that gives me pause is the NDS switcher offer. Usually, switcher offers require bringing your own phone instead of buying a new one getting the trade in promo.

@MicCheck

I hear people say that ATT doesn't do door to door, that only third party does that. Yet you're telling me that it was corporate that we signed with, not third party.

I am honestly so confused.

On the topic of NDS: Well they did tell me to head over to ATT Store to finish getting the promotions settled, maybe they were refering to that? I think they told us to bring our phones, I guess they assume that we wanted to do a trade-in as well

I don't know who they work for, just that the seller (AT&T Mobility) is AT&T. Perhaps it shows up that way since he's selling AT&T service as a contractor. In any case, it really doesn't matter who he's employed by, only whether the information he gave you is correct.

The "free" phone promo requires a trade in.

Telling you to go to an AT&T store to "settle promotions" is huge red flag that he wasn't being honest. I second the suggestion to file a BBB complaint.

The fact that the door to door people may work for be a contractor and be not AT&T employees, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s always a scam.  They could legitimately be authorized to sell AT&T services, and may be doing an honest job.  It may be the case in this specific instance based on what you’ve posted.  I absolutely would not get hung up on the ATT Mobility name issue.  All that means is you’re signing up for cell service with AT&T, which is what it should be.
