How to get a refund for overpayment of closed account?

My son had an AT&T account. Once he was able to he paid it off and closed his account. The people at the store overcharged him and now he is owed quite a lot of money. He has called in quite a few times, even talking to a supervisor approving him getting his money but no money has been produced. He’s very upset and I feel like AT&T is giving him the runaround because he called today and they claimed they knew nothing of it. This is bad business on your part and I would like to know how you intend to get him his money! Not a debit card but a check sent out ASAP! If he was a late customer you’d be nagging him for his money!

AT&T would automatically send it prepaid debit card. After you get the debit card you'll have to call and request a check

Well they haven’t even sent that! He can’t get anybody on the line to tell him if it’s going to be sent out cause he should’ve got it this week. He still has gotten nothing.

Well until he gets his money back “Constructive”, I’m going to keep complaining and talking bad on your customer service until we can get service! People should stop being cheated out of the money they’re owed or the service they are promised!!

Why do you think that? How long ago was the account closed? It takes a minimum of 6-8 weeks for a refund to be issued. If it’s been longer than that, tell him to file an FCC or BBB complaint to escalate to corporate.

Hello TaLynn, we'd like to bring you into a Direct Message. By speaking in private we'd be able to take a closer look at the account as well as the refund you've mentioned.

I missed your private message but it would help I guess.

It doesn’t sound like it was an overpayment, per se, but a credit applied to the account. Credits aren’t refundable, regardless of why they were issued.

He should file a BBB complaint. I think escalating through them will be the only way he actually gets a refund.

It was and they knew it was because the amount on his paper was way less than what he was supposed to pay and they agreed.  You can’t use a credit if you don’t use the company anymore. I’m sure of that! He’s waited longer than 6-8 weeks for it! But thanks we will definitely make a complaint and who knows when he’ll get his money back..

@TaLynn  it's time for you to stop helicoptering and stand back.

He couldn't have a postpaid account of his own unless he were 18 which means he's a legal adult.

Your son should be contacting AT&T on his own . He should be on this forum on his own.

Your son should know how much he owed for both service and phones, and how much he paid.

He should also know if there were any credits issued as a courtesy. That's his information if he's old enough to get an account on his own it's up to him to manage it now. You stepping in is inappropriate unless he is incapable due to a disability.

Because this is his account information you shouldn't even be allowed to talk to AT&T for privacy reasons. So I don't believe a direct message is going to do you any good.

Your son would also be capable of filing a Better Business Bureau complaint on his own
