Lied To Regarding TOBR

I was told I could transfer my cell phone from my parents account to my personal account (internet), same plan same price. The opposite was actually true: approx. $50/month plan for my line currently was going to be charged at $95/month; and I was told by Chris TOBR supervisor a social security number was required to "set up wireless account" and "your social security number is just for internal purposes." Thanks to Lifelock, I was notified immediately when AT&T inquired for my credit report. When I asked for the TOBR supervisor's "Chris" employee number or extension (anything to identify him), I was told AT&T's policy was not to give out that information. So my question is: HOW DO YOU PEOPLE AT AT&T FIND IT REMOTELY ACCEPTABLE TO ASK FOR A CUSTOMERS SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, DOB, ADDRESS, ETC. AND YET YOU WONT GIVE OUT MORE THAN A FIRST NAME WHEN YOU MAKE A MISTAKE!? This company is morally corrupt. And I was asked if I wanted a "free" tablet today (which provided quite the ironic comedy when I saw on the first thread of this forum "tablet scam").

Two things. A social security number is required to open an account. I have no idea why the rep did not tell you they do a credit check but they do and it's not like they hide it because it is pretty much common knowledge that they do. Every carrier does.  As for your plan, you may well be getting the same plan and price but you need to understand that a plan with multiple lines costs less per line than a plan with only one line. You may have only been paying $50 on your parent's plan but that was likely not just charges for your line. They probably also added your share of the data plan to your line charges or maybe they didn't charge you for the data plan at all but now that you have your own plan, you have to pay it.

You are wrong. T-Mobile, Blue Wireless, Cellular Wireless, etc. all offer no credit check plans with similar features; and, I have had the same cell phone number with AT&T for 14yrs and been a internet customer for over two years (both accounts of which have been paid on time, every time). I could maybe understand why a new customer would be required to produce a credit check (if a $500-$1000 phone is being financed through the carrier), but it is an utter slap in the face to customers - with demonstrated on time payment - who have been loyal to a carrier for years.
Feel free to pull a page out of the Amazon, Google, Vivint et al's customer service playbook on how to treat customers and respect their time; because you're not getting any sympathy when you book $3.5 billion in net income in the first quarter and your customer service is still predicated on a phone call center (as a technology company). Absolute joke.

I believe all those "no credit check" plans are prepaid. ATT has prepaid too and no credit check. Whether or not they should be doing a credit check based on your history with them is a different story but even if they did not do a credit check, they would still need that SSN for future possible credit checks. I'm not arguing whether it is right or wrong, just stating that is their requirement to open a postpaid account. I've heard of long standing customers with perfect payment records getting a credit check for adding a line.

I'm not sure why you'd want to pay as much as a 3 person plan.

There are no $50 AT&T plans that would work for 3 people.

Specifically what plan  were you on?

Blue wireless and Consumer cellular, along with most prepaid small carriers require you buy your phone at full price.  That way if you don't pay your SERVICE bill, they just cut you off.

ATT's version is Cricket or Gophone.  However, if you are paying for a phone, switching to prepaid will require you pay off the ETF or balance of Next installments.

For comparison....my Bill is $168 for 4 phones and a tablet.  My sons each kick in $35 a month.  Their phones are paid off.    If they moved to their own plans, they would have to move to either

$90 plus tax for unlimited plus. ( not enough credit history, so fail check)

$45 Gophone plan is where they would wind up.

Its cheaper to be part of a big group.....
