Next Upgrade Nightmare

I upgraded my iPhone XS Max, to the iPhone 11 Pro Max, and I want to keep the XS Max. I owe $250 for the Next account balance, for the device I want to keep. I have no problem paying that off, except, when I go to "Manage device installment plans" it says that the contract has been upgraded, and the phone is paid off. Well, Its not paid off. I owe $250, which was also confirmed by receiving a text message, that said, return your phone, to not get charged the $250. Well, there is no option to pay the $250 to keep the phone. I want to unlock the XS Max, to use it on a work account, and submitting an unlock request gets denied because the phone isn't paid off. Ive gone round, and round about this with chat, 611 and 800-288-2020.

Just keep the phone.  You will be billed for the remaining $250 a month or two.

i can’t unlock it without it being paid off. And I need the device to be unlocked for my work carrier. I just spent an hour on the phone, with the Philippines and now they’re telling me that I can just go to a store, after I went to the store and they told me I’d just have to wait for the bill. If they can send me a text that says I owe the $250, why won’t they take my money?

They can’t. Until they bill you for non return, there is nothing to pay, and the phone doesn’t exist and can’t be unlocked.   20/20 hindsight, the time to pay it off was before you upgraded with trade in.

They didn't send you a text that says you owe $250. They sent you a text stating you would owe $250 if you didn't return the phone.

I owe $250. I paid 12 months of next payments. They somehow put me on their silly 30 month plan, so, I paid $499 to upgrade to my 11. The phone is $1,249, I’ve paid $999 between installments and $499 to upgrade price. The remaining balance is $250 if I want to keep the device.

They pulled the same garbage with me, when I bought my iPhone 11, this year. I absolutely made sure I was on NextUP. Their, stupid, New, New, New, confuse the heck out of you, plan that they made up to take even more of your money. I received the contract and it says “Next,” not “NextUP.” Now I know how it happened to me, last year. My online account even says I’m on the next up plan, and they’re charging me the $41.67 instead of the $5 NextUP add on, that should make my bill $46.67. Right plan, shows on the bill. They’re charging me the wrong amount and my contract is also incorrect.

@limegrntaln  Why would you even upgrade with At&t?  Why not go through Apple?

I almost think it’s Apple that put me on the wrong plan. Their cross platform signup process, isn’t the best in the world. I’ve done both. This is my 14th iPhone upgrade. So, it’s not like I haven’t been through it before.

And AT&Ts system flips out when you try to return a “Next” phone that you ordered from Apple. My 6 plus, 6S Plus, 7 Plus and X were ordered from Apples site, on launch day. And trying to Next upgrade those, was a nightmare. One of them I Next Upgraded, and AT&T tried to tell me I returned the wrong IMEI. No, this is the phone I ordered from Apple.

I figured it would be easier to just get the phone from AT&T, direct. But that’s proved to be just as bad.
