Sales Tax Refund NOT RECEIVED

On November 25th, my mom and I bought a Samsung Galaxy S23+ at an AT&T store. We paid a sales tax of $82.50 and had it shipped to our home because the phone wasn’t in stock at the store. We called the AT&T customer service center because it was stolen while being delivered. The agent said he would refund our sales tax and send a SIM card. The SIM card arrived, but the refund was never processed. We went back to the AT&T store only to find out the agent had processed our case wrong. He was supposed to send a phone, not the SIM card. Because of the mistake the agent had made, we had to pay a downpayment of $300 to get the phone unless we got the whole order reversed.

We called the customer loyalty department to reverse the order. The lady on the phone created a ticket that would cancel our original order. She said we would be able to get a replacement phone AND get our original sales tax refunded. We got the replacement phone at the store, where we paid the sales tax for the second time. However, it has been almost 3 weeks yet the original sales tax still hasn’t been refunded.

We are very disappointed with how AT&T is handling our case. Can we please get a refund on our sales tax?

First check that your original sales tax was actually charged. It may have been an AT&T incorrectly assumed that that charge would drop off.

The usual process is they charge you sales tax upfront and that original charge drops off when they ship the phone and then they charge the actual sales tax at that time. Which is confusing because then you'd see an $82. Charge on the day you order the phone, then you'll see a different (often for a different amount) charge on the day your phone is shipped, but the original $82 sits his pending and then disappears.

If you file a better business bureau complaint online, the complaint is forwarded back to AT&T upper management and someone will contact you and take a closer look at what went wrong

Dear AT&T Customer Service,

On November 25th, we purchased a Samsung Galaxy S23+ and paid $82.50 in sales tax. Due to a delivery issue, our case was mishandled, and instead of a replacement phone, we only received a SIM card. This led us to make a $300 downpayment for a new phone.

Despite assurances from the customer loyalty department that our original order would be canceled and the sales tax refunded, we have yet to receive the $82.50 refund after nearly three weeks.

We are very disappointed with the service and request the immediate processing of our sales tax refund.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

@faiqarani  This is not the way to contact AT&T.  If they even read this, all they will do is post telling you to contact them.  They will not take action based on your post.

If you don’t get your refund in another week, I’d recommend filing a BBB complaint.
