Traveling to Spain

What is the most cost effective plan to  use AT&T for international travel?  Will be going to Spain/France for upto  6 weeks.  Do I buy a burner phone?  Buy a new SIM card?  Just need some budgeting guidance as i plan to use text, phone and google maps daily.

Cost-effective doesn't necessarily mean the most useful.

If you get a local phone:

If you want to text people in the US, no one knows your number.  If you want them to call you, they're dialing long distance to Spain. You're not getting your texts or calls (I find this inconvenient).

If you use the International Day Pass:

Your number works, people call you by calling your US number, you have the same amount of data, all your texting works.

It's $10 a day, no more than $100 per billing cycle.  So depending on how your weeks line up to your cycles it could be as low as $200 for a lot of convenience (and not buying a burner and a plan) to maybe $220-ish (depending if you break into a 3rd billing cycle and if 6-weeks is exactly 6 weeks or off by a few days).

Thank you Gary! I thought I read in a post that the International Day Pass was discontinued.  I will call AT&T to get more details on this.

There is no reason to call AT&T.  You can turn it on in your account settings at att.com

Read about it at

Do NOT wait to turn it on, it should be turned on everyone's account all the time!  Data is $2.05 a MB without IDP, that's $10.50 for 5MB (that's nothing), it works out to $2,000+ per GB, so this isn't something left to chance. You're only billed when you would have used data anyways...

Hello @Stanspj9, we would be happy to assist you in finding the most cost-effective plan when making calls outside the U.S.

We do offer International Day Pass in which you can pay $10 a day for your first line. You can also get additional lines for $5 a day each if used in the same day. You'll only pay for the days you use your phone in over 210 destinations.

Hope this information helps, and thank you for contacting AT&T Community Forums!

Also keep in mind that if you are on WiFi calling, you will be using your regular domestic plan. If you call Spanish/French numbers, you'll want to make sure you're on the cellular network so it falls under IDP.

Can you elaborate on this statement you made?

you can pay $10 a day for your first line.

You can also get additional lines for $5 a day each if used in the same day.

The if used part.

Thank you

The if used part.

This means only if it connects to a foreign tower.

Let's say you have two lines. On day 1, Line A uses their phone. That's $10. If the other phone stays in airplane mode, that's all you'll pay. On day 2, it's Line B that uses the phone. That's $10. If Line A also used their phone on day 2, that would be another $5.

No problem, that's what forums are for!

One other clarification, I used Day 1 and Day 2...those are 24 hour periods, not calendar days. If you first use the phone at noon, the $10 covers until 11:59 AM the next day.

My gmail account forwards email from specific sender to my phone via text using the domain txt.att.com.  I'm traveling to Spain next week, does anyone know the gateway address for that country so I can do the same thing?
